Leave from the city bridge in Kampen, in its time it is the most important Hanseatic city in the Netherlands. This is of course because it lies at the mouth of the IJssel, which connects the Zuiderzee with the Rhine. (It was a smart move at the time to exchange Mastenbroek for Kampereiland (with Jan v Arkel the Bishop of Utrecht) with the right to gain (land reclamation)). But, as is often the case with delta cities, the IJssel fell silent and Kampen lost importance. But they did build a bridge over the IJssel within 5 months to guarantee the connection with the hinterland (Deventer, Zutpen, Dieren, of course, were very lucky). After the Spanish war, Kampen had so much tenancy, that they no longer levied taxes. So a lot of industry went to Kampen despite the silted up IJssel. Around 1815, 50% of the people of Kampen worked in the cigar industry. It was mostly home work, with more than 1.5 million cigars being produced per week at one point. Take note that Kampen also had fishing rights on the many inland waterways since 1284 and that they were fought and won until the 19th century (and perhaps now)! If you walk through Kampen now you will notice the many churches, because Kampen is also a city of believers. When you get there at church time, the traffic jam of cyclists and walkers is on their way to and from the many places of worship. Leave Kampen via the Broederpoorten, which were moved in 1465 and where you can get married. From Kampen we walk past medieval dikes where the cracks are bursting, so the farmers had a problem with their lands: floods at night and thaw. It is the new Hanze line (which will open at the end of 2012), which pretty much dominates the landscape here. Driving from Lelystad here at max 200km / hr, because the security system is modern. The arcs (curves) probably do not allow this maximum. You will end in the small but beautiful estate IJsselvliedt, which is just in Gelderland.
