Circular walk 'Molenroute' from Landscape Waterland along windmills, beautiful wooden houses and the river Zaan to the Kalverpolder and the Enge Wormer. Soggy peat polders and a reclaimed land plant. Not only the Zaanse Schans, but the whole of the Netherlands has become world famous with the mill thanks to the windmill, the Zaanstreek developed into a flourishing industrial area during the Golden Age, and once the steam engine was invented, the mills soon disappeared from everyday life, leaving only 13 of the 1,000 industrial mills in the Zaanstreek. This walk not only looks at the windmills, but you can also enjoy quiet polders with whistling meadow birds. Eventually you return to the Zaanse Schans, a lively place with many tourists, where people still live and work today. There are many museums, mills and farms, many of which have been moved to this place. Yet the neighborhood is typically Zaans, with buildings along the outside of the dike and paths perpendicular to it. The houses and merchant houses are almost all green with a white border. Initially, the houses were tarred, but when factory paint production started around 1850, the Zaanse green came into existence. A small (free) place of interest is the first shop of Albert Heijn.
