This long dyke walk takes you past the sparsely populated and the newest area around Amsterdam. The area is very watery and if you walk along the seawall you will find yourself in waterland. The Zuiderzee has caused a lot of damage over the centuries but, it also formed a beautifully protected port for Amsterdam. The ships were led to the mouth via Het Paard van Marken and the lighthouse island near Durgerdam. With Pampus and Fort Muiden, it formed part of the Amsterdam Defense Line. The real activity starts at Schellingwoude, which was merged with Durgerdam in 1923 at Amsterdam (Noord). The bridge is old and rusty and takes you to the mouth of the Amsterdam Rhine canal in the IJ. Here are the access roads to the new IJburg district. The district is on artificial island, which has now been nicely built up with modern bridges and houses. Parallel to this elongated island is the original landfill of Amsterdam: the Diemerpark. The soil cannot be remediated, so they have poured a concrete container around it and hermetically sealed the layers. The route ends at the PEN plant and a De Diemer Vijfhoek Nature Reserve (also artificial).
