The island of Texel. With its 20x8km, Texel is the largest Wadden Island and forms a substantial part of the circular walk around Noord-Holland. Texel is actually the province itself in a nutshell: in the west the dunes and in the east the polders. There is a difference: Texel has peace and much more nature. You can very easily bypass Texel from the large ferry port where every hour a ship comes out and swallows the cars, because Texel is a real tourist island with many Germans. All kinds of buses take you to the right place. The western walk is beautiful. Walk along the Mok and via a beautiful dune heath area to De Koog. It is interesting to see how state forest management protects the island by designating a few places and designing it as a walking area. Ecomare is such an area. The great Jac P. Thijsse is honored here. Texel's only forests are also located in this area. De Koog itself is the seaside town of Texel, with many eateries and shops. North of De Koog things get serious, because here you come through two magnificent nature areas: De Muy and De Slufter. The latter area is salty and has a special plant growth. The sea lavender flowers there in August and colors the plain lilac. The saltiness is due to the fact that the sea can wash in freely through a dune interruption. This produces beautiful pictures of creeks and sand flats. The route ends at the northernmost tip of Texel: The lighthouse. That the island is moving is proven by the fact that in 1864 the sea was 3 km from the lighthouse, while the tower is now on the sea.
