The Kennemer dunes, a classic walking area for the Amsterdammer. How many children from the capital have not (have had to) make their first walks along the cheerful hares that mark the paths to play fields? It is teeming with lax rabbits that are hardly inclined to run away, tiny toads that jump across your path and large snails, apparently working on a kind of migration. You can sweat here if you sweep through loose sand, but the shell paths creak pleasantly under the soles. You gradually end up on the former Duin- and Kruidberg and Midden-Herenduin estates. The mansions stood on the edge of the dunes, overlooking the spiritual grounds; behind it the property of the gentlemen stretched out to the sea. The old avenues with gnarled trees recall how they let themselves be driven to the beach in their carriages or go hunting. Now they are nature reserves to the delight of everyone. The route leads along semi-wild ponies, sheep, cattle through thickets and through a brook valley and of course along the Vogelmeer (with observation hut); nearby are the tower flats of IJmuiden-Zuid. Then you leave the dune terrain and enter the country behind Santpoort: old farms, dreamy meadows. You approach the Santpoort-Noord station to board the train home again or have a beer at the riding school.
