Start the tour in Woudrichem, a small fortified town at the place where the Maas and Waal meet. From 1300 it was a strategic place, which has often been besieged. Because it no longer proved defensible, it was set on fire in the 80-year war. Later the town became part of the Dutch water line, so that it was not possible to build around Woudrichem. Ditt lasted until 1926. And that has of course yielded a beautifully preserved area. The path to the east runs through beautiful floodplains and through Sleeuwijk (near the A27). Close to the A27 you see 6 old concrete structures of probably a failed driveway. Werkendam, where you visit, is the largest place with a lot of industrial activity. It is mainly Protestant and has a lot of religious life. After Werkendam you can walk on the raised (unpaved) summer dike to the ferry to Dordrecht, but because the original Bandijk was left alone, extra water reservoir is needed and there is. The polder land has been returned here. The water is so fresh that it is not (yet) on Google Earth or staff maps. In short, a pleasant surprise, because you have had it after 6.5 km of bare dike. So much water comes together in this part of the Netherlands that the amount of rivers cannot be dragged on. The Merwede divides into two large rivers (Nieuwe and Beneden Merwede), while a little further on the Maas joins the whole. All of this naturally results in the beautiful delta area which is called Biesbosch and which splits into the Brabant and Holland Biesbos respectively.
