A nice route this time, which leads through the Maasheggen. You will find many birds and badgers here. Julius Caesar already wrote about it, because his armies had some difficulty passing through these braided hedges. For centuries these hedges have been a natural separation area from the plots and are therefore unique in Europe! We pass Vierlingsbeek. It lies on the Roman Heerbaan and has excavated Roman urns. Of course this village also became Protestant but in 1800 the Catholics got their church back. The Roman Catholic contractor only provided such masonry for the new church that it completely collapsed after 20 years. King Willem II was involved in financing the new church. It became the Koningskerkje. The second place you pass is Boxmeer. It is a bit bigger and through the ages remained a free glory, where the Catholics attend mass. The procession of the Holy Blood has been held there since the beginning of 1400. The river Maas has been stripped of its bends here and that provides nice extra flows. The route ends on the other side of the Maas in Limburg Gennep. For this we have to cross the Maas bridge, which played an important role in the beginning of the Second World War. Through a clever trick, the Germans managed to take the bridge by passing the bridge with arrested pseudo-NSB men as Dutch patriots. After they had chatted over it, the group of NSB men became a dangerous group of soldiers and the bridge could be taken without damage. It was also over this bridge that later the armored train full of German troops entered our country and could push through to the heart of Brabant. During the liberation there was also a lot of fighting.
