The riverbank reserves extend like a green ribbon on both sides of the Maas. Consultation between the Limburgs Landscape Foundation, Staatsbosbeheer, Rijkswaterstaat and the municipalities of Venlo and Peel and Maas produced the Baarlo-Blerick River Park, part of the Maas Corridor. In the north this starts with the Raayweiden, which extends from the industrial port of Blerick to the city center. This original pasture with recently dug additional channel from the Maas is developing into a species-rich area due to the grazing with galloways. Selective grazing favors some plant species and disadvantages others. Roughs develop and here and there trees and shrubs store. Growing trees will 'soften' the view from the historic Venlo center on the Blerick industrial estate. A second sub-area with its own galloway herd runs on Blerick's Balcony and via the Blericker Nak to the adjacent Romansweerd. It is a varied part of the river park, originally consisting of agricultural grassland. In the autumn of 1995, after the extreme high water periods in the winters of 1993 and 1995, part of the grasslands in Romansweerd were excavated. The released clay was used to construct quays. All sorts of pioneer species such as black mustard and little plover seized their chance on the bare ground around the puddles. Over the years, the area has become completely overgrown naturally. Willow forest still dominates around the puddles. It forms the habitat of the beaver. De Rominenweerd is particularly rich in bird species. More than 180 species have been observed, including many special ones such as porcelain grouse and forest monkey. Due to the changes from excavation to forest formation, the breeding population changed considerably. Pioneers and species of grassy areas disappeared or declined [lapwing, oystercatcher, little plover, grass beeper]. Nowadays, mainly species of young forests breed (fitis, chiffchaff, forest reed singer) and many species of water birds [grebe, tufted duck, mallard duck, crackling duck]. Incidentally, pioneers will once again have a chance in the coming years. In consultation with the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, part of the site is being redesigned and part of the forest is being cut down. This way, high Meuse water can pass better while also maintaining the variation in the terrain. The Balcony of Blerick has been installed by the municipality of Venlo near the center of Blerick and the existing port of passers-by. This walk takes you all the time on the banks, giving you a wonderful view during the entire walk. The walk can be shortened to 4 1/2 kilometers. You then cross the Zuiderbrug (large bridge on which the A73 also runs) once you have arrived here. On the half of the route you cross by ferry to Steyl. The skipper asks 20 cents for this crossing over the Maas. Centrally located in the monastery village of Steyl you will find the impressive monastery St Michael and the Mission museum and Brasserie 't Vaerhóes. Here you can enjoy a varied selection of food and drinks. You have the option of extensive brunch, lunch or dinner. On the entire route you will encounter herds of Galoway cows. They look impressive but don't hurt a fly. Don't like these grazers. Then you can dodge them by taking the route across the street, taking it on both sides a little further from the Maas. You can't get lost always keeps the Maas on the left and everything will be fine.
