Along De Eems: a very varied walk that starts in Termunten and then in Termunterzijl. During the Sint Maarten flood in 1685, as in many villages, everything was destroyed. The ferry connection with Emden was destroyed. A new sluice sluice (Zijl) was built with a beautiful ornament from 1725, the Arc of Soul, on it. After the Soul, you walk through a nature reserve, but then it starts: The Industry of the far north: Delfzijl, or better Farmsum. It used to be a defense fortress now it is an industrial fortress, where you will find an Aluminum smelter (one of Europe's longest factory streets) and Akzo Chemie. The nice thing is that you can walk along the dyke beautifully. That pipery is quite an impressive sight. In addition to the fact that many villages have drowned, villages have also been sacrificed to industry. Otterdum is an example of this. The only thing left is tombstones and a bronze hand, with a church in it. For the rest there is nothing more than old photos. Even the bronze statue was stolen from copper in 2011. There is now a replica. The real Delfzijl is also a fortified city. Through the water gate you can walk through the old town back to the dike. There you will find the Eemshotel. A building on stilts in the middle of the Eemsmond. From here you walk in peace again over the good walkable dike to two old towns: Bierum and Spijk. Bierum is idyllic with its sloping tower propped up by a large buttress, while you will also find industrial heritage: Unicum from 1892. Spijk is really old. In historical times the country was slightly higher here and 700 years BC was already built here. It is a wierde village, where people built their houses and church on an elevation. In Spijk the church is really at the center of the wierde. You can go there every Sunday via a radial pattern of streets and church paths.
