The Zak van Groningen. You start this tour in Ter Apel. It is an extremely pleasant village which has already been visited during the Drenthe tour. After all those long canal villages, Ter Apel is a relief, because it also has forests. In addition, it has a number of striking buildings: for example, there is the monastery with accompanying church. It is a large complex that is on the Unesco list and that is special because after the reformation the buildings came to Groningen and everything went down. With a recovery program, Groningen is the best preserved monastery. In Ter Apel you will also find a school building in the style of the Amsterdam school and last but not least there is also an AZC (Asylum Seekers Center). It is really striking, when you stand at the bus stop to Ter Apel in Emmen, how many colored people are waiting. From Ter Apel we walk to the German Border. Sometimes the path is clear, but sometimes the border path disappears completely. Pay attention where you walk. We pass the green village of Sellingen on the east side. You come by bus and it is certainly worth the effort to visit. It is very old. The path along the border is bizarre. Sometimes you can walk there, sometimes it is gone, so pay close attention to ditches and try to go through the arable lands if you have to. A few kilometers before Bourtange it all becomes a bit more structured and a fantastic path runs across the border to the Bourtange fortress. Again a pleasant surprise. It dates from the 16th century when Groningen chose Spain and that was quite against the will of Willem van Oranje, who wanted to block supplies from Germany. He had a fortress built there, reconquered Groningen and the fortress became a defense against the Germans after 1594. Remember that this fortress lay in the middle of the swamps, which later dried out, whereby the function of the fort was slowly but surely lost. The fortress was not rebuilt until the 20th and is now a major tourist attraction.
