The Last Wad Of all the Wadden Islands, Frisian Schiermonnikoog is perhaps the most beautiful, and that is mainly because it is not only so small, but also so versatile. The only thing you can do is enjoy nature and you can only walk, because you cycle around the island before you sit on it. The island used to be attached to Friesland and only became an island in 1287. The gray Cistercian monks gave the island its name, because it is almost gray. Anyone who knows Terschelling will immediately recognize this island: in the west the dune heads and in the east a long drift dike with a beach on the north and salt marshes on the south. The Germans have survived here for a long time; in April 1945, more than a hundred SS men fled to this island where a garrison was stationed. That was not surprising, because since the end of the 19th century the island was bought by a count Van Bernstorff. So the Germans did not need an integration course. At the end of 1945, the Dutch state saw his chance to confiscate the island from his son Bernstorff. The young count tried for a long time to get compensation and yes he received a tip of 80,000 DM. The chic Hotel Restaurant De Graaf of Bernstdorff still reminds us of the count, while the neighbor neighbor Hotel Van de Werff has always been there and where the coffee still comes from the jugs and costs 1.80 euros. The island has two lighthouses, one old white and one new red one. The white one is now a water tower, while the red one does the real thing. Schier has many extremes: it is the smallest municipality, the northernmost municipality with the northernmost lighthouse etc. Schier is subject to a great deal of natural disasters: many dune turns, drowned villages and a walking east stretch. The drift dike encloses nothing, but forms dunes on the spot and keeps the mudflats on the south side quiet. It is beautiful and full of birds: Harrier, seagulls, oystercatchers. During the breeding season you do not get to the east, sometimes there is a covered wagon. In short, Schier is a good place to be, you almost stumble over the orchids and sometimes you see a parnassia standing between the sea lavender.
