The Fochteloërveen - this part of the way around Drenthe or Friesland is one of the highlights. Due to the introduction of coal (that burns much better), the peat bogs stopped just in time. The Fochteloerveen is the remainder of 2400ha that is left over from the enormous peat moor area that has been cut off here. You will now find many rare plants and birds. During our journey, you might even come across the smooth snake. The area is watered with all kinds of dams, so that the original state is preserved as much as possible. You will also pass by Veenhuizen, which is popularly called the Gulag of the Netherlands. The institutions were built here for people who oppose employment in the peat. People spoke of the nurses instead of the prisoners. You can enter the village. Before 1891, it was only accessible to prison staff and prisoners. At the moment, there are about 1000 prisoners in the three criminal institutions, it has the largest ammunition depot in Europe. So you will find a lot of bunkers and lots of grenades. There are many monuments with illustrious names such as: Humanity (the doctor's home), Bitter and Sweet (Pharmacy), Order and Discipline, Labor and Blessing, Knowledge is power, Leering by Example etc. Just like in the Peel, it is bursting with it the canals (called Wijcken), which were needed to transport the peat. You therefore end with the Elleboogvaart to Haulerwijk. Haulerwijk used to be in the peat areas and got its peak during the peat excavations. Now it is a quiet village.
