The Drentsche Aa area in the middle and north of Drenthe is one of the last coolest valleys in the Netherlands. It consists of old Drenthe cultural landscape with countries (grasslands), bushes, wooded banks, ash (fields), heaths, juniper berries, esdorpen, dolmens and country estates. A large number of streams run through the area, including the Drentsche Aa, Schipborgsche Diep, Zeegser loop, Anloër deep, Gasterensche Diep, Deurzerdiep, Andersche Diep and Amerdiep. The Natura 2000 area consists of the Balloërveld, Oudemolen, Gasterse Duinen (in spite of the name mainly a wet area), Gasterse Holt, Kampsheide, Eexterveld, De Strubben, De Vijtig Bunder, the Natura 2000 area and Zeegse area. To the south of this area are the separate associated areas of Geelbroek, surrounding Amen and Andersche Diep. The Ballooërveld (defense) is an extensive heathland with some pine forest and archaeologically important elements (burial mounds, celtic fields, hesse roads). The Gasterse Duinen is a hilly area with drifting sand, heathland, gale struts and woods. Kampsheide includes dry and moist heather, juniper berries, fens, coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as burial mounds and celtic fields. The Fifty Bunder is a heathland in the north, on the crossing of the valley of the Drentsche Aa.
