The Netherlands does not really have a river with a source, it is too small in this little country. The linge could be eligible, but appears not to have any real source. The IJssel, now this river in Germany is called Issel and runs from Raesfeld to Gendringen to end up as Oude IJssel near Doesberg in the Overijssel IJssel. Slightly complex, but in the end the Issel is a branch of the Rhine, which has gotten its own source in Germany. You have to take the bus to Raesfeld and with signs you are indeed referred to the Isselquelle. Once at the source, it turns out that it is no more than a duck puddle with a sign beside it indicating that this is really the Isselquelle. Like a ditch, the water runs further to the north-west and takes a lot of effort to trace the water and to identify it as Issel. By the way, Raesfeld is a nice place with a real water castle. Furthermore, the town is famous for its Isselquelle (haha) and for its origins old. The Netherlands may have old places, in Germany it is usually even older and that is mainly due to the more stable landscape. Over the first 10 km of the hike you see the Issel mainly from the bridges, but the good news is that little by little walls and dikes are emerging that you can walk on. Especially the last part near Marienthal is beautiful. The town is known for its monastery. The nice thing is that along the water of the Issel, the terrace runs onto a terrace. And that is nice to arrive of course if your shoes have to dry from the wet grass.
