Arrival: On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the tourist line 792 departs from Detmold to the Hermannsdenkmal car park. On weekdays you can use the lines 703 (stop Kreuzweg) and 704 (stop Hiddeser Straße), which run until Hiddesen, then a short hike to the Hermannsdenkmal. All information about it is also available at www.stadtverkehr-detmold.de. Hike: We start our tour at the Hermannsdenkmal. The monument is intended to commemorate the Cheruscan ruler Arminius and the so-called battle in the Teutoburg Forest, in the Germanic tribes under the leadership of Arminius (Latin, in German: Hermann, Armin) the Roman legions under Publius Quinctilius Varus in 9 AD decisive defeat. The walk to the monument is simply a must. The monument (www.hermannsdenkmal.de) is open daily. In the immediate vicinity is also a high ropes course. Now your hike continues over field and to the hiking trails to the Adlerwarte Berlebeck. The largest and oldest bird of prey in Europe shows more than 180 large and small birds of prey. There are daily free flight demonstrations, a panoramic terrace and playground, as well as a teaching and information center. On our further hiking trail you have to overcome a few meters in altitude before we make another long break at the Falkenburg (www.falkenburg-lippe.de). For centuries, on the Falkenberg in the Teutoburg Forest a hilltop castle, which was one of the largest medieval dynastic castles in Westphalia, rose. Since 2004, the ruin is rebuilt year by year a piece. Our tour continues through the Teutoburg Forest mostly slightly downhill and soon we reach the famous Externsteine (www.externsteine-info.de). The Externsteine - a striking, up to 40 meters high towering rock formation in the valley of the Wiembecke Horn-Bad Meinberg in Lippe - are among the best known natural and cultural monuments in Germany. The cross-decline relief which medieval stonemasons hit in the rocks is of international importance. A visit to the information center is a must. Now only a few minutes walk away is the youth hostel Horn-Bad Meinberg, where we end the adventurous hiking day comfortably. If you have to travel home, you should continue to Horn-Bad Meinberg station (3.5 km). From there you return to the starting point in Detmold.
