Bielefeld is the versatile, vibrant university town in the German Teutoburg Forest. Bielefeld is economically and culturally the largest city in East Westphalia Lippe, one of the most dynamic economic centers in Europe. With around 330,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld is one of the 20 largest cities in Germany. Bielefeld was founded in 1214 as a merchant's city and has further developed into a modern big city on a 'linen thread'. Linen weavers, the steam engine and the Ravensberger Spinnerij are the most striking witnesses of this development. Historical, industrial building culture is just as decisive for the present cityscape as the generously laid out green areas and modern architecture. Bielefeld celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2014 with a highly varied anniversary program. Make a highly recommended visit to the Bielefeld Kunsthal with its beautiful exhibitions on classical contemporary and modern art. The planned visit to the symbol of the city, De Sparrenburg was built around 1240 and is the most striking symbol of the city. Discover Bielefeld in this city walk as a friendly city in the green. You will come across the following sights, among others. Alter Markt (magnificent) The historic old town of Bielefeld with its beautiful aristocratic houses, such as the Crüwell-Haus with its beautiful late-Gothic stepped gable from 1530. Spiegelshof a building from the early Renaissance in the style of the Western Renaissance with a beautiful view of the Sparrenburg. Nowadays the 'namu' museum (nature, people, environment) is housed here. The monument designed by Hans Perathoner in 1909 symbolizes the economic development of the city, which is closely linked to linen processing. In addition to the Sparrenburg, 'Der leineweber' is the symbol of the city. The Altes Rathaus was built around 1904 in a historicizing combination of styles, the city theater (Stadttheater) and the old town hall (Alte Rathaus) form a building unit. In the foyer of the town hall is a model that shows the city around 1650. In the center of Bielefeld you can see a number of important sacral buildings with precious art treasures. In the old city center, the Altstädter Nicolaikirche, the Neustädter Marienkirche, the Süsterkirche and the former monastery church Sankt Jodokus are more than worth a visit.
