Between 1772 and 1776, Duke Friedrich von Mecklenburg-Schwerin had Schloss Ludwigslust built as the center of Ludwigslust's late-baroque city construction. Until 1837, when Schwerin became the residence again, this castle was the residence of this noble family. From that moment on Ludwigslust was used as a hunting lodge and summer residence. In the mid-19th century, the famous garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné turned the baroque garden into an English landscape garden. A number of baroque elements, such as cascades and fountains and waterworks, have been integrated into the new park. The castle has been restored since 1986. Many authentic details have been preserved, such as 'Ludwigsluster cardboard' ornaments, a kind of paper maché. The extensive collection, which contains art objects, furniture and utensils from the 18th and early 19th centuries, is a good example of the collecting rage of the Mecklenburg dukes. Special collection items are the busts of the French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, architectural models from cork and the watches.
