Attempted to reach the trailhead in a good 4x4 Saturday Dec. 28th, but got stuck. Got winched out, drove down that night. Hung out at Elbe Tavern, ate great food, drank copious amounts of Rainier beer with the locals. In the morning I rented the snowshoes I didn't know I needed from Rainier Mountain Sports, and proceeded to disregard all warnings from the owner to not attempt this trip alone at this time of year. Sunday Dec. 29th at 12:20PM, made it to trailhead. It was a gnarly, difficult offroading drive up the backside, almost didn't make it again. Recommend 4-wheel low. Perfect weather when I reached the trailhead though, much better than Saturday. Snow was perfect for snowshoeing. Took it slow, reached the Lookout in exactly 2 hours. Breathtaking views, completely worth it. Never saw another soul on the trip, the solitude was nice. On the way down I noticed a big cat had followed me up part ways, and it's tracks crossed mine several times. Got back to truck in 1 hour 22 minutes, just before sunset. Took some great sunset pics and drove back to the Elbe Tavern to watch the Seahawks game. Great weekend. Please be prepared and watch conditions carefully.
