This is an excellent hike to introduce someone to longer-distance backpacking as the elevation gain is spread out over such a long distance. This can through-hiked in either direction—White -to-Chinook or Chinook-to-White. Hiking Chinook-to-White is significantly easier as there is a net elevation loss in that direction. Starting at Chinook Pass eliminates the big climb out of Dewey Lake and the very significant climb out of the Bumping River bottom.
