A previous review had me thinking this would be a bit of a route-finding endeavor to get to the top of Kelsey Peak. I was surprised to find there was a trail the entire way save for the last .2 miles on the final ascent to the summit. That isn't to say it's a 'nice' trail, but it's there. It's steep in places, quite narrow in others, and sometimes both once you start heading towards Piney Pass along the face of the mountain. It's nothing exceptionally difficult as far as mountain summits go, but if you're uneasy with heights and/or aren't surefooted then you may not have the greatest time. On that note I did not bring trekking poles, but would have found having at least one a bit nice for the downclimb. The views from the top of Kelsey Peak are outstanding, and you'll more than likely have it to yourself since it seems most folks stop at Butterfield, if not before that even. Just show up early to make sure you get a parking spot cause they fill up quick. At this time there are zero issues with overgrowth and downed trees; it's clear the whole way. Bring some warm layers cause it's very chilly up top this time of year!
