Nice loop for a long day hike or overnight backpacking trip. Route features forest, rocky vistas, and blueberries in the summer months. Trailhead is easily accessible via parking area off Shingletown Road.

I've hiked this route twice now, and have loved it both times. My favorite thing about this loop is the variety of terrain throughout. Musser Trail is in a humid valley with brushy forest, opening up to old-growth forest along the Mid-State Trail (MST), and Jackson Trail is somewhat barren with lots of rocky vistas. Chipmunks and deer were plentiful, while frogs and owls provided a nighttime serenade. The three-star review is due to the lack blazing at the transition of Musser Trail to the MST, as well as the of water this time around versus when I hiked this route 18 months ago. Several springs along the Mid-State Trail have almost completely dried up, and Shaver Creek is now only a trickle. Both Musser Trail and Jackson Trail are moderately-trafficked, and I met lots of friendly and interesting folks during this trip!
