A fun and challenging hike to one of the best firetower views in the adirondacks. Right from the get-go the trail is fun with two water crossings - the first being the Hudson river where there used to be a bridge but it was washed away during Hurricane Irene in 2011. Soon after you will find the "floating" bridge (planks that sink) across Lake Jimmy. Just after crossing Lake Jimmy the trail that takes you to Mt Adams splits from the Allen trail and the steep hike begins. Over the next 1.6 miles you will climb 1700' and earn one of the best firetower views in the state.

The first half of the trail is very easy. There is a bridge that looks like it's going to fall, but I got on it and it was strong. There's a lot of mud in this area, too. The second half is where the fun really begins, each turn you find an area that is steeper than the one before. All the rocks are covered in ice, so, bushwhacking happened more than I planned for. Microspikes are needed for this part. Didn't have a view at the top because of the weather. A good one to two inches of snow fell while I was there. Also saw a lot of animal tracks, none that I can identify.

Incredibly muddy with lots of standing water on first half of the trail. Middle of the trail becomes kind of tricky to stay on since it isn’t very clearly marked. Then it’s all an uphill battle. Ice and snow toward the top. Beautiful hike, although I regret wearing trail runners instead of hiking boots. Fire tower is pretty cool too!

We did it! The climb up was wet, washed out and very very steep. The multiple cross overs just lead to what seemed like an endless array of ‘another steep stretch’! The fire tower is very high. Views are great! Tower has no window glass any more, so bundle up first, it’s much cooler up there, and leave your pack at the bottom. Tight fit at the top. The decent was much easier that we supposed.

Great 360 views from the lookout. Relatively easy trail with only a few rocky scrambles

Probably one of the coolest hikes I’ve done. Suspension bridge was neat and surrounding Tahawus history very interesting. You have to climb Firetower for views but well worth it. Highly recommend for the Firetower challenge!

The trail was as described. The flat beginning was contrary to the steep upper section. The rock slabs and scrambles were mostly dry but very difficult to handle for our family of 6. They lasted much longer than I expected and were significantly steep. However, there were people of all fitness levels out and if you took your time and stopped for a break occasionally you can do it. It was windy and cool at the top of the fire tower. The view was well worth the effort. What a beautiful day to catch a glimpse of the high peaks. Getting to the top is only halfway and the trip down required careful steps on the step descent.
