Beautiful views at the top. Steep, but doable if you take your time. Short hike so the steepness doesn't seem too bad. I'm 57, in not the greatest shape, but didn't struggle too much.

Nice trail with a challenging climb and some incredible views. It was just the break I needed after hours in the car.

One of the best views in MN! I decided to hike this trail after noticing that it was on the way to Grand Portage State Park, where I planned to see High Falls. The trail wasn’t marked very well at the “Y” (go left when getting there, so you start to ascend) and it was easy to get lost at a bunch of little trails at the very top of the mountain. Other than that, there were no bugs and it was a decent workout! I highly recommend this trail for its tranquility (I didn’t meet anyone on the trail) and the breathtaking view at the top!!!

I'm rating this 5 stars because any failure to enjoy this trail was due to me, not the trail. I would have to rate this as a hard moderate. I used to hike a lot when I was younger, then I moved to the flat portion of the Midwest and gradually became 50 years old. As was mentioned, portions of this trail are very steep, and very narrow. If you have just a teensy fear of heights, this may be difficult. We made it to a lower portion with a bit of a view, I'm not quite sure how far we had to go yet, but I had no more 'go' left in me. My 17 year old went on ahead a bit and came to a fork where he turned around. I have no doubt the view would be worth it, but it wasn't going to happen. So, be honest about your fitness level if you do this trail. I work out 2-3 times a week, a variety of yoga, strength and cardio. Clearly not enough cardio.

Great hike! Took about 2 hours including the time spent at the top. Took about 40 minutes to reach the top and spent awhile sitting and enjoying the views.

Beautiful single file trail that had scenic overlooks with moderate intensity

This was a great hike. Steady grind to the top. Tips- since cellular service is so sketchy in the area know where to locate the trailhead before you head off to find it. Secondly- trail goes left at the fork- special thanks to the good souls who marked it with an arrow made from sticks. Beautiful views at the top. Well worth it. Our favorite in this area.

This is definitely a nice challenging hike. Steep elevation and some narrow areas or trail, but totally worth the views at the top.

Had a couple kids in backpacks so was tiring with the elevation but oh so worth the view. Our seven year old did well too.

View is worth the whole hike! The side overlooking the isle Royale is amazing. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

The mile trail to the summit was tough, but doable. The view at the top was well worth it!!

Fun hike with a good view at the top

Nice little hike, moderate is an accurate rating. Not very challenging. Had bad luck and went on a super foggy day. Couldn’t see much.

Amazing trail and the tough climb is totally worth the view at the top! It is of the most vast and seemingly untouched vistas of Lake Superior that I know of.

The trail is pretty steep as far as trails in the Midwest go. It's beautiful at the top, your staring at two different countries and the largest freshwater lake in the world, how can you beat that?! For less experienced hikers I would advise to just take your time, it's not that bad.

Pretty overgrown, but very quiet. Steep in some parts, but not overly challenging. Fun to see some very old creepy abandoned cars on the way. The view was great, wish we would have gone earlier in the day to appreciate it longer. Bring bug spray!

Hiking Mt. Josephine should not be rated "moderate"; I agree w/Best North Shore's rating & description: "This rough and challenging trail has the steepest climb—and the most dramatic view—on the North Shore. Difficulty: difficult. Best for experienced hikers with stamina and the ability to route-find on unmaintained trails. The trail climbs 600 feet in just over a half mile—perhaps the steepest climb on the North Shore. Trailhead facilities: none"
