This route starts at the Carter Caves Welcome Center and joins the Three Bridges trail for the last mile before completing the 4-hour loop. The 4-C's Trail begins at the Welcome Center, passes through the Shangra La arch, runs parrallel to smokey valley lake before crossing Smokey Creek and ascending hill leading to Johnson Homeplace Backcountry Primitive Campground, permit required to camp and may be acquired from the Welcome Center. The trail crosses lake Spillway and joins Three Bridges trail before returning to the Welcome Center.

Perfect for an all day hike or an overnight camp/hike. If you camp, you have to get a permit. This actually worked out good for us this past Saturday. We were caught in a major storm. We were ok, but the lodge called our emergency number to make sure we were ok. The blazes are fairly new and a definite upgrade from the previous blazes. Still a few places you have to pay attention to what you are doing, or you might be off trail. I wish I was back on this trail right now!

Lots of places were rutted out by horse traffic and many places were covered in horse droppings. One marker was washed out in a creek bed and a few blown over trees. Other than those few things it was a terrific trail and easily completed in around 4 hours.

Tried going mountain biking on the Kiser Hollow Trail (yellow trail on the trail map, included in this trail), which is marked as a multi-purpose trail (including bikes). What my group and I didn’t realize is that it also includes horses, which have completely destroyed this trail. We couldn’t find the entrance to the Kiser trial, so for at least 2 hours we tried to walk our bikes through the other trails that lead into Kiser, which was absolutely horrendous (I realize they are for hiking only, so that doesn’t affect my rating). However, we ended up getting lost because the trail map seemed to be wildly off-scale. After giving up and wanting to leave, we realized we were at the farthest point from where we entered. As experienced mountain bikers, it is rare we have any issues tracking our progress via trail maps. Our poor experience may be our fault, so I won’t include that as my rating, just wanted to share. However, between the trail map and the horses’ destruction of the trail, it was a miserable experience. On the other hand, some of the sights are amazing. At the beginning, before we merged onto we saw this mini-rapid type of thing by the wooden suspension bridge that leads to a small body of water. It was fine to swim in and was a really good photo opportunity. If you decide to hike this trail, bring a camera. Also, be prepared for ticks. Our group off 3 pulled off at least 20 altogether.

Finished the trail today! Overall great place with nice places to spend the night. There was some confusion keeping track of the trail heads so I would recommend getting a map and a gps. I had a blast!

Stopping at the shelter for the night so I’ve recorded my progress here. So far a great trail! Lots of rock views and if you’re quiet a deer or two. Can’t wait to see what happens on my way out tomorrow!

Hiked Memorial Day Weekend. We are new to backpacking and this was our first attempt at an overnight hike. We started hiked at the Welcome center and hiked 2.5 miles in and set up camp at a designated campsite, Johnson backcountry site. Then packed up and headed out around 8am. Hiked 6.5 miles back to the welcome center, finished about 2:30pm. The trail was great, lots to see; lake, bridges, rock formations, natural rock bridge trail takes you under it. I would recommend gps tracking, got turned around once with connecting trails. Had cell service most of time but several areas with no service. Had little service at campsite.

My wife, son and I had a fantastic day at Carter caves. We got a later start on this trail than we anticipated. Started about 3 PM and finished right before dark. Trail was great and fairly easy to follow. Lots of different things to see and appreciate so it has something for everyone. Only ran into 1 group of people the entire time which is perfect for us.We hike pretty often, still a challenge. Our son is 9, he was draining by the last mile or so. Would not bring littles along.Definitely recommended otherwise. We will be visiting again for sure.

My hike came out to 9 miles and almost took 6 hours. FANTASTIC hike with waterfalls, lakes, suspension bridges, arches. You definitely have to earn it with this trail though. Great for a day trip and the drive on route 9 was also scenic and enjoyable. A little too much maintenance road hiking for my liking but all things considered this is a prime hiking trail. Very well maintained and well marked, have no reservations about this trail as long as you start the hike early.

I started out at the lodge (there's a connector trail from there). This trail will show you most of what Carter Caves SP has to offer. Rock bridges, waterfalls, rock formations, lakeside paths, suspension bridges, streams etc. It's all beautiful and will not disappoint. It rained the night before so things were pretty muddy. This trail is on the hard side of moderate; many stream crossings and a decent amount of rock hopping. I wouldn't take small kiddos out on it. Elevation-wise however, it's not bad. There's a tough crossing at the dam when the water's high so be careful. I have a photo of it on my recording. Total length was about 9 miles and you'll want to give yourself at least 6 hours to complete it. A fantastic all day hike if you take in the sights.

Great trail. Mostly easy, with some moderate uphill sections. A few places were not marked very well, and there were a few places where unmarked trails branch off of the main trail. My advice- stay the course and don't make a turn if you're not sure. Although I did walk some of these trails for a bit to see where they went, then doubled back. You might be able to get lost if you go too far. Of course a good walking stick is recommended for the spider webs that you will encounter. Markers say to allow 6 hours for this trail, but it's easily done in much less if you're a frequent hiker. Also, Shangri-la arch is collapsing so be careful in this area. There are arrows painted on the rocks to help guide you, just beware if you travel this area especially after heavy rain, there may be falling or loose rocks.

Super fun for my husband and I. We even brought our two dogs and explored the caves that you can get into without guides. Super wet but great time

Great trail with lots of scenery and challenging terrain, well worth the 3 hour drive I made.

Completed this trail in the fall. It has a perfect blend of scenery and variety of terrain to keep it interesting throughout the duration of the trail. I recommend hitting the trail early and bringing a lunch, and not rushing through this one. It is so much better to really appreciate the scenery on this one and take your time.

Another great hike at Carter Caves. Beautiful scenery. I really enjoyed Shangra La arch. It was a lot nicer than what I'd seen in pictures. A good half way spot to sit and rest for a bit. A nice peaceful hike.
