This is a great alternative trail to the Deep Woods Trail where a good 40% of the hike is on park roads. Both the Orange (Deep Pond Woods Trail) and the Red (Ridge Trail) are woodsy hikes with varying terrain. Going clockwise in this loop, the Orange trail starts off with about a third of a mile of boardwalk going over a wetlands area with lots of informational signs on the plant life in that particular area. The trail then leads into the woods as it winds it way around the edge of the park. The occasional ledge and large boulders mixed with varying elevation changes keep this hike interesting. At the northernmost end of the trail, we stopped and enjoyed a trail lunch on a picnic bench near the small pond. The second half of the trail (red trail) is a little more rigorous but offers up some nice views in a couple of places. The trail descends into the main area of the park across from the beach where restrooms and more picnic areas are available. An inviting dip in the lake would be a big plus in the warmer months.
