I didn't do the full trail as I was in a regular sedan, I just went to the ghost town. I got some pretty funny looks from people in their lifted 4WD trucks! That being said, the Ouray website actually lists this as being accessible by car which is why I went. You just need to pay attention to the road for dips and take it slow (I probably didn't go above 10 km/h the entire time). The town and road is quite picturesque and the histories of the families and houses was interesting. The fine tailings pile is still there from the mine and I was able to find some neat rocks in it. I highly recommend - especially if you need a rest from hiking like I did!

This is a do not miss if you’re up in the San Juan range. Great site with lots of history and an awesome effort made by the historical societies and BLM. The directions on this site will take you through Corkscrew Gulch and California Gulch. These are 4x4 accessible only areas. So you will need a atv, jeep, or side-by-side. We came in via County Road 2 and through the avalanche zone, which is down to one lane due to a still uncleared avalanche. In the summer it is bug season, so be prepared to deal with the gnats and biting flies; this is not civilization and is a back country area. But if you make it, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views and a wonderfully preserved ghost town.

Jeeped this one as part of the Alpine Loop. Cool ghost town. I always recommend people not take stock 4x4 vehicles on these mountain passes; rent a proper Jeep or ATV. But if you think you can do it, don't let me stop you. I just think it's a bad idea. Definitely no passenger cars....that's just plain dumb.

Elevation: 11,200'. Quite a bustling community in the1880's. Became a ghost town in the 1920's. Many buildings still standing today.
