The road up to Toad Lake is a rugged dirt road, but our '07 Prius still made it. Toad Lake is gorgeous and an easy hike from the trailhead. To Porcupine Lake is a small climb to the PCT and then a breeze. Porcupine Lake is also quite stunning during this month (August) when evenings are brisk and days are hot enough to encourage skinny dipping. I went with my 8-year-old daughter and we loved every moment. We fished in Porcupine Lake for our dinner one night, chatted with PCT hikers who were stopping over, and enjoyed the views of Shasta and the Castle Crags. Not too busy and during days felt appropriately secluded.
