This is a nice trail around the green area covering the villages of Herberhausen, Roringen, and Nikolausberg. The hike basically follows the edge of the forests, with the exception to the side trip up the “Kehr”, due to the better roads and ways there. The Bratental is full of birds that one does not see so often in other areas around Göttingen. It also harbours rare orchids and other plants that can only be seen here (two kinds only in this area, nowhere else in Germany). From the Bratental, the path leads behind the mountain village of Nikolausberg and then down alongside a creek that looks like a miniature Grand Canyon, with phantastic rock formations, pools, wells and canyons, before ending up in the bigger creek the Lutter. Crossing the B27, one turns left again into the forest and up a small path passing a meadow with fruit trees (“Streuobstwiese”), good for more birds, and the famous Bismarckstein (“Bismarck’s monument”), which everyone in Göttingen knows by its other name, the “Elefantenklo” (Elephants’ loo). From there, back to the parking lot at the Herzberger Landstraße where you started the trip.
