Did this trail in July for my brother’s bachelor trip and it was really fun. We hiked to ribbon lake and back in a day, with a 2 km backtrack as we took a wrong turn at one of the bridges. All in all it was about 26 km for us. The trail is not technical (except for the chains, which are not for the faint of heart) but it is a very long hike if you plan on doing it all in a day. It took us about 9 or 10 hours to do the whole thing, but at the top, the views were well worth the trek. I would definitely recommend you have boots with good ankle support as much the of trail consists of larger rocks that are uncomfortable to walk on on the way back down.

Nice easy (but long) hike up to the falls. Heading up to the lake was great, as you get to explore the other falls above. The weather was quite damp, which made the rocks/chains quite slick. This definitely made for a difficult traverse. Appropriate footwear is a must! The lake itself is quite peaceful. Falls are definitely what make this hike great

First part of the trail to the falls is fairly easy. The trail to the lake before the chains is not the one marked on all trails. It will go around the marked trail up into the trees first. Don’t go up the scree slope. The chains are challenging and require some smearing on the rock face. Fun though and a bit of a thrill and making it to Ribbon Lake is so worth it.

Just did this trail this weekend and it is gorgeous! We camped two nights at Ribbon Lake. The campground is awesome and has two large group fire pits. We also hiked up Guinn’s Pass as a day trip which was beautiful and fairly steep! I would caution against doing the chains if (like me) you lack rock climbing experience and are even a little bit afraid of heights. The way up was frightening but okay, but the way down was extremely scary and felt pretty unsafe, especially with large packs. I would say I felt like I barely made it. Guinn’s is a safer option that is just as beautiful! We didn’t try it, but apparently Buller’s is great as well. Especially for solo backpackers, please be cautious!

Went last weekend, Great views and the chains were definitely fun! More heavily trafficked hike than I would have guessed.

Just went to the falls. Easy hike in terms of elevation and technicalities. Distance is 22km round trip so can be tiring! I’d love to go back and travel to the lake!

If you have a half decent mountain bike the first 5km are an easy bike, place to lockup and continue around another 5km to the falls. After the chains keep to the right until you hit the campsite, great trout fly or cast fishing, they love the spinners or the worms. And nice camping spots

Definitely not 997m of gain, felt more like 500m if that. The trail is very easy up to the last grind to the lake. There is the chains, which are not for the faint of heart if you are afraid of heights.

Beautiful hike! I definitely think I would do this hike again. The cliffs were fun, I am terrified of heights so I did have a bit of a moment climbing up, but it was so worth the views at the top. We found that it took longer than 10km to the lake, we think 10km is to the falls and then another 4km to the lake. The pictures of the lake don’t do it justice, it was stunning! We camped overnight and got all different types of weather... sun, rain, hail and snow haha. It was still worth it :)

I think the 20.6km round trip only gets you to the falls, it doesn't get you to the lake. My GPS showed about 13km to the Ribbon Lake campground. While the trail may be "accessible year round" according to All Trails the last few km to the falls is through avalanche territory. in the winter. If anyone doesn't like heights then the chains between the falls and the lake could be very tough both physically and mentally. The trail follows the creek up to the falls and while gets slightly harder the further you go the views get better and it is very worth the effort. Lots of places to refill water bottles along the way, no need to pack a bunch of water the whole way.

This is a great, mostly tree covered, creek side trail. The trail is clearly defined, so you can zone out and just enjoy the scenery! The trail follows closely alongside a beautiful creek, with a few great spots to stop and have lunch. Great backcountry camping, especially if you're new to the sport and don't necessarily want a hike with a lot of elevation gain. Where you'll get more of a workout is past Ribbon falls, up to Ribbon lake. Great outing, can't go wrong, whether you're hiking or trail running!

This is a gorgeous trail. It’s in good condition right now, though there is ample run off making its way down the surrounding peaks. There are a few places where you’ll have to cross small run off streams but it is mostly dry. Chains are a fun challenge, but the lake is pretty well inaccessible unless you’re feeling adventurous and enjoy post-holing through thigh high snow...the lake is still 95% snow covered anyway.

This trail has some amazing views, featuring a well traveled trail with a nice mix of sun and shade. Easy going till the falls, which are awesome! Then the real stuff starts. We climbed the steep meadow and cut across the creek and rocks on the other side. A little sketchy, but it gives you the sense that you’re on a spectacular adventure. The views from on top of the meadow are unreal. We crossed a couple stretches of snow, ( really sketchy!) and finally had to turn back right at the cliff base. Snow made it impassable. Would’ve loved to see the lake but oh well. Next time!

We took some of the Cochrane Humane shelter dogs here today for a hike. It was beautiful. Lots of water access for the dogs. A great mix of sun and shade. The trail head needs a better marker. Some hikers were confused and went over the bridge at the parking lot. The trail starts on the rocky shore near the Ribbon Creek tourist post. Head up the creek. Thanks to all the other hikers on the trail for letting us pass.

So many beautiful things to see makes the hike fly by. Terrain was fairly easy to navigate with a manageable incline, some areas were uneven and rocky. At about km 4 some trees had fallen over and blocked the path so you had to go off the trail a bit and then around km 8-9 the snow was too deep and we could no longer navigate the trail ( we weren’t prepared for that much snow). Can’t wait to do this hike again once all the snow melts.

Was an easy hike up until the snow got really deep. At around 7km in until the falls the snow was almost too much (sometimes up to my waste). Couldn’t make it to the lake because of that but will definitely go back in the summer to make it all the way!

Great hike. Amazing views. Deep snow around km 8.5-10 all the way to the falls. Falls frozen but still an incredible hike.

Second time hiking to the falls and lake. the trail is in great condition. There is a small section of the trail above the waterfall that is harder to follow to the lake.
