Length: 4.9 mi • Est. 2 h 34 m
A walk from The Bath Arms in Crockerton, near Warminster in Wiltshire. NOTE: The Bath Arms pub may be closed, but the walking route itself is fully open (just park on the roadside). The walking route explores the beautiful surroundings of the Longleat Estate, a stunning area of mixed woodland with a large lake at its centre. The walk has several climbs and descents throughout, including a couple of fairly steep sections. There are a couple of sections walking on village roads and a country lane without pavements, so take care of the traffic at these points. A few sections within the woodland can get very muddy at times so good boots are a must. There are no stiles, kissing gates or livestock on route, making it ideal for dogs and families (although not suitable for pushchairs). Some sections of path on the return leg are quite narrow so could be prone to becoming a little overgrown in the late summer. Approximate time 2.5 hours. Show more

This walk meanders through the woods and eventually arrives at King Alfred's Tower, a 160 ft folly made for Henry Hoare II in 1772. The folly marks the spot where King Alfred the Great rallied his troops in 878 and commemorates the end of the Seven Years War. The walk returns through Park Hill Camp Iron Age Hill Fort and Turner’s Paddock. Start: Stourhead visitor reception, grid ref: ST778340Show more

Length: 3.1 mi • Est. 1 h 38 m
This short circular walk begins in the Wiltshire chalk hills starting from the tiny village of Norton Bavant. The walk climbs out and up to Scratchbury Hill, one of the finest Iron Age hill forts in Wiltshire, and then continues through arable farmland to return to the village. The views from Scratchbury Hill are really wonderful. The walk has several kissing gates but no stiles. There are several climbs and descents but they are all either gradual or short in nature. The chalk grassland paths are narrow and uneven and can be quite slippery after wet weather. There are sheep grazing in several of the fields so take care with dogs. The walk is quite remote so there are no toilets or refreshments on route. Approximate time 1.5 hours. Show more
