The route starts from Copley, use the Calder and Hebble Navigation towards Brighouse via Elland before a climb via Southowram to Beacon Hill overlooking Halifax. After a descent via Bank Top, follow the Hebble Trail for the return via Salterhebble. The Calder and Hebble Navigation travels eastwards for 21 miles from its junction with the Rochdale Canal at Sowerby Bridge to link with the Aire and Calder Navigation at Wakefield. Completed in 1770 it is a mix of canal and canalised sections of the River Calder and predates the Leeds Liverpool Canal in crossing the Pennines. After leaving the canal, it is then a climb on very rural tracks, old bridleways and by-ways. Beacon Hill at 864ft is one of the best locations for panoramic views over Halifax. It used to signal warnings to neighboring townships in ancient times. In the past it has seen a number of executions take place, the last in 1703. Piece Hall in Halifax was built in 1779 for the trading of locally made hand woven ‘pieces’ of woollen cloth. It is one of only two intact cloth halls in Europe. It is currently being redeveloped to the tune of £19m with Heritage Lottery Funding. Shears Inn(c.1664) is a hidden gem in a unique location. The pub used to be in rolling fields until the mills were built around it. Unbelievably the narrow cobbled road running at the back of it used to be the London to York road. The Hebble Trail starts from the Railway Station and leads to Salterhebble where Hebble Brook flows into the River Calder. It closely follows the route of the Halifax Branch Canal which now terminates at The Quays at Exley. It is a cycleway and green route into the heart of Halifax. An altogether very satisfying area to explore!Show more
