Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is encompasses one quarter of the county of Surrey. The hills are predominantly formed by chalk, the northern ridge being separated by the Vale of Holmesdale. This then continues into Kent from the southern ridges which are predominantly greensand which provides a haven for rare plants and insects.. The highest summit in the area is Leith Hill ar 294 metres (965 ft) above sea level. The attractive landscape is also home to largest amount of woodland areas in the country, half of which is ancient woodlands. Several long distance paths cross the AONB: High Weald Landscape Trail, Wealdway, 1066 Country Walk, Saxon Shore Way, Vanguard Way and Sussex Border Path.
