#1 - Churnet Valley Cycleway
Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, EnglandLength: 6.1 mi • Est. 2 h 27 m
Explore the enchanting Churnet Valley, Staffordhire's hidden gem on this 9.8km trail. An area rich in history, wildlife and spectacular scenery.
The Churnet Valley trail is a railway path following the river Churnet through woodland and meadow along the old railway line.
The route can be kept short and take cyclists straight to Dimmingsdale. This shorter route, being completely traffic once on the greenway in the village, is perfect for families with young children.
It's a magical place set in a deep wooded valley originally designed by the Earl of Shrewsbury and now managed by the Forestry Commission. Cycle off route around the lakes while you are here, keep a look out for Herons, Kingfisher and both spotted and green woodpeckers.
Dimmingsdale is also the perfect place for a mid route break, enjoy lunch or a slice of cake and a drink, in the gardens of the Ramblers Retreat or cycle slightly further on toward Alton and the Alton Bridge Hotel where you can sit outside with bikes by the rivers edge.
