A circular walk from the pretty Leicestershire village of Mountsorrel. The route explores the attractions within the village itself, including the buttercross, market cross and former castle site, as well as guiding you to stride out along a peaceful stretch of the River Soar, part of the Grand Union Canal. There is plenty of historical interest within the village plus birdlife and boat-life to enjoy along the river. The expansive views from the top of Castle Hill make the short climb very worthwhile. The walk is almost entirely flat for the most part, with just one optional climb up to the summit of Castle Hill. The riverside paths are unmade and can get very muddy after rain and in winter. There are 6 stiles to negotiate (all of which have large spaces within the wooden fence surrounds which should be suitable for most dogs to pass through) plus some kissing gates and steps. The river can be fast flowing and deep in parts and also includes some weirs and locks so take particular care with children. Some of the riverside pastures may be holding livestock so take care with dogs. Approximate time 1 to 1.5 hours.Show more

Services are usually limited to weekends and bank holidays plus selected weekdays in the summer, so check timetables before you travel. This 6.5 mile linear walk in Leicestershire runs through varied and attractive countryside, and offers a ride with style back to the start, courtesy of the Great Central Railway's steam hauled trains. It runs from the railway's Quorn and Woodhouse station, 2.5 miles south of Loughborough, to Rothley station. The first section of the walk runs alongside a delightful little river, and provides good views of the railway, while the latter part takes you through the mature Oak woodland of Swithland woods. Most of the walking is on paths and tracks, with 0.9 mile along roadside pavements. The riverside walk can get very wet and muddy after rain. There are 9 stiles on the walk, but none of them pose a barrier for most dogs. This is a good walk for dogs. Livestock is only likely to be encountered in a field in the first section, and another one in the last. Allow 3.5 hours for the walk, plus trainspotting time.Show more
