This walk starts in the village of Ravenstonedale following the Scandel Beck towards Smardale. You may see wild birds, aquatic animals, a variety of insect and beautiful flora in the nature reserve. Once you pass the Ravenstonedale school and cross the A685 onto the pasture, you will pass through a gate followed up a gate-side stile. Make a right after the Smardale Bridge which will lead you to the old railway trackbed. Make sure to explore this area. Once you reach Smardale, cross the bridge and pass under the main line and head towards the cottages at the end of the lane. Look for the signs toward Brownber. You will go along the shoulder of Smardale Fell and Howgill Fells and soon after reach and cross the Smardale Bridge. Next, you will cross a stile to the left and the large plantation. After making a left and then a right at the handgate over a stone hut, you will take the next handgate and path towards Ravenstonedale. This will lead you to King's head and back to where you started. Show more
