Von der Elbmarsch nach Finkenwerder

The hike begins on the edge of Neuwiedenthal. With a view of the Elbmarsch, the route follows the Moorburger Hinterdeich dyke, which was built in the 12th century to protect the cultivated landscape from the water of the nearby moor. This is followed to Moorburg, where the harbour area is entered. The Kattwyk Bridge marks the start. With a lifting height of 46 metres, it is the largest lifting bridge in the world. The route continues to Moorburger Berg. It was created from the excavated soil during the construction of the Altenwerder container terminal. From here you have a breathtaking view of what is happening in the container harbour, which was built on the former village of Altenwerder. The only remnants of the old village are the church and its cemetery. Next to it, close to the A7 motorway, are two Enercon E-126 wind turbines, each with 6 megawatts and a total height of 198.5 metres, making them some of the tallest structures in the Hanseatic city. An average of 13,500 containers are handled in Hamburg every day. They are transported to and from the port by lorry and rail. A logistical tour de force. You can get an impression of this by crossing the roads at the Waltershof motorway slip road. Along the Dradenauhafen harbour, the Finkenwerder outer harbour and the Köhlfleet, you reach the jetty in Finkenwerder. The walk has a very special charm, especially at dusk, due to the illuminated industrial plants. The return journey is on the harbour ferry 62 to the jetties.
