Cycling on the Lakeland Route A spectacular water world with more than 20 new lakes is being created between Dresden and Berlin. The Lakeland Route leads through the young Lusatian Lakeland. Cyclists can experience first-hand how the largest man-made water landscape in Europe is growing on the 186-kilometre quality cycle route. Here, where lignite mining once dominated the landscape, a new water paradise is being created by the flooding of former open-cast mines.
The Lakeland Route runs from Lake Großräschen in the north to Lake Bärwald in the south of the Lusatian Lakeland, passing a total of 16 lakes. Along the way, you will experience the change in the landscape from growing lakes with rugged shores to completely flooded lakes. In some places, the transient stage between open-cast mine and lake can still be experienced directly. Other lakes were flooded decades ago and now boast beaches, water sports, marinas and amphitheatres.
Landmarks and striking viewpoints along the way offer cyclists great views of the impressive changes in nature. Whether industrial culture, such as the stations on the ENERGY Route , garden cities, landscape art or the customs of the Sorbs - the Lakeland Route also awaits you with outstanding attractions away from the lakes.
With numerous cyclist-friendly bed & bike accommodations along the route, cyclists can feel completely at ease. The signposted tour leads mainly along tarmac paths and has few climbs.
The Seenland route connects to the Spree Cycle Path.
