Popular long-distance hiking trail from Worms to Mainz The RheinTerrassenWeg runs through Rheinhessen in six stages and connects the cathedral cities of Worms and Mainz. The route combines scenic wine landscapes, historical sites and Rhine-Hessian wine culture. An access route leads from Worms Cathedral to Herrnsheim, where the RheinTerrassenWeg begins at the castle. After crossing the castle park, the route runs through vineyards via Abenheim to Osthofen. The route continues via Bechtheim with its Romanesque basilica and through the hilly vineyards near Mettenheim with their characteristic hollow paths. In Guntersblum, a detour to the Heidenturm church is well worthwhile. During the summer months, the Kellerweg festival attracts numerous wine lovers. The stage to Oppenheim offers sweeping views as far as the Frankfurt skyline. Oppenheim itself impresses with St Catherine's Church, the cellar labyrinth and the Landskron ruins. The route continues through Nierstein with its narrow alleyways and along the famous Roter Hang to Nackenheim and Bodenheim. On the Laubenheimer Höhe, a wide view opens up over the Rhine and Taunus. A geological section at the former Weisenau quarry leads to the riverside passage along the Rhine, which finally leads to Mainz City Park and via an access path to the Roman Theatre railway station. Mainz's historic city centre, which is well worth seeing, is in the immediate vicinity.
