This hike leads around the impressive site of the Frechen quartz works to the west of Cologne, one of the most important quartz sand mining areas in Europe. From the starting point, the trail leads around the entire perimeter of the active quarry on well-maintained forest and peripheral paths. A particular highlight are the viewpoints, which offer spectacular views of the vast, almost white sandy areas and the deep blue groundwater lakes at the bottom of the pit. Deer, hares and various birds of prey such as the kestrel can often be seen in the recultivated edge areas and neighbouring woodland. The route is mostly flat and runs along paved forest and field paths.
