According to the latest information, this is the case when the Alster is covered with a layer of ice at least 20 cm thick. Outside of such special conditions, an alternative route ashore must be taken.
From the starting point, the route heads south around the airport. Follow the Tarpenbek to the Eppendorf mill pond. Cross the Borsteler Brücke bridge and through Hayns Park to reach the Alster. This is crossed at the Winterhude Bridge. The route continues along the riverbank in a southerly direction, reaching the Aussenalster at Eichenpark. The route then leads back across the Alster foreland to return to the starting point on the other side of Hamburg Airport. Accessible by bus and train. There are refreshment stops along the route.
