The Kybfelsen rock towers above Freiburg's east, where a castle was enthroned in the early Middle Ages and only a few remains of its walls remain today. The trail can be started from several places in Freiburg.
The Brombeerweg trail leads steadily uphill past some of the region's mountains to the Kybfelsensteig trail. This is also a popular technical mountain bike trail. The descent is via the Kybfelsenweg back onto the Brombeerweg.
