Stunning scenery! Took us 4.5 hours to complete going clockwise (as shown on AllTrails), although passed others going opposite direction. Could have hiked it faster, but took many breaks for photos and admiration of the landscape. Would definitely rate this as hard hike. Had to climb several steep sections on the ascent and going down can be tricky as well, as is very muddy. Recommend sun block (no shade) and take your time. Look carefully for signs and markings. Some portions of trail not indicated well. Hitting the summit was worth the effort. Surreal hike along the ridge of the mountain. Beauty here is ineffable.

Pretty lake, but the hike itself doesn't add that much to the view from the lookout.

Recommend going off trail and through the polyepsis forest at the west end of the loop. Came back on the private road; don't recommend.

Ruta 2 from the park headquarters is this trail to the Cerro San Luis Summit. Incredible trail. We are avid hikers and the altitude made this quite difficult. We took about 3.5 hours which included the kilometer on the highway to the trail head plus time for a summit picnic. Also, if you are colorblind be advised the trail blazes are Kelly green and quite difficult to distinguish (my husband couldn’t see any that were painted on rocks). The 360 degree views from the summit are incredible and worth the tough, sometimes muddy, trail.

Great hike to complete in Parque Nacional Cajas. You get some stunning views of the lakes and valleys. Would recommend hiking boots or shoes with very good grip as going down can be slippery. Some wet marshlands to navigate.

The view is beautiful. However, it’s a very muddy, and a long hike.

Started this hike in the morning while the weather was nice and sunny. There are light green signs/arrows along the way although a few were fading or hiding behind bushes. Stunning scenery with amazing view over the many lakes of the park. Hike itself is classed as difficult on the park map. We thought it to be moderate on the way up and a little trickier down as it was so muddy you were slipping and sliding (and falling) most of the time. Nice hike, however did not stand out as one of my favourites in Ecuador.

Actually I did a longer circuit, starting from and returning to the refuge. The circuit was 7 km long and I would say it is moderate. We did this in 4 hours, enough time to enjoy the landscape. Nevertheless, I recommend to be well equipped and prepared for wind, rain and fog. If sunny day, sun protection, hat, sun glasses. Water and some chocolate it will be needed.

Beautiful hike. It's fairly easy and non technical. There are numerous cow trails so we found ourselves off the main trail several times. It's open and expansive so it's easy to get back on track if you're recording. Since the trails are used by cattle there is a large amount of cow/horse poop. The Caja's are muddy at the best of times. It rained the second half of our hike. The trails pooled water. Just accept that you will be dirty and wet when you are done. We caught a bus from the terminal in Cuenca and asked the bus driver to let us off at the trail head. We just went one way. The Luspa trail ends at the highway. We started to walk and flagged down the first bus we saw. For an extra dollar the driver let us off where we asked. Great experience.
