Nice trail with a few uphill sections. Only about ~45 minutes from the parking lot between there and Freshwater lake. The view is amazing, the air is cool, and gorgeous plants everywhere.

so much diversity in one trail. jungle walk, ridge line cloud ascent, steep drop, valley of desolation (boil eggs on the way back here), stream crossings, and finally the surface of another world complete with an actual boiling lake. we hiked in the rain most of the way and it was cool and wonderful. my GPS tracked 15 miles out and back. definitely try to start no later than 10am. you are rewarded at the end with a wonderful swim in Titou Gorge to cool off and clean up. the sounds are wonderful too!

The jungle is ruthless. This trail was tough. So many ups and downs.

Steep climb out of Trafalgar that levels out at the top of the ridge. Worth stopping at Trafalgar and Middleham Falls along the way. Trail is clearly marked and in good shape.

At the start of the trail is the gorge where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. Great for a swim after the hike. The front half of the hike is mostly steps, mostly up but some down to river crossings, until you gain the peak. Then it’s downhill, steps for awhile then becomes rocky and steep descending into the valley of desolation. Bring an egg or two to boil in the sulfur springs. The trail below this area is washed out so follow the stream until you see it take off to the right up a steep embankment, there’s a rope to help you up. There’s also a hot/warm waterfall and pool here to swim in. It’s wonderful beyond words, supposedly sulfer water is good for the skin. Then up to boiling lake a half an hour more. Depending on atmospheric conditions it can be enshrouded in mist. It’s was raining heavily and incredibly windy the day I went. On the plus, nice and cool and dozens of incredible waterfalls and low clouds around the volcanic spires, it looked like Pandora. The negs, the entire trail was a muddy riverbed and slippery, river crossings went from bad to worse as the day went on. Forget about dry shoes, impossible. The weather made it exciting and adventurous. Do it!

I did this hike back in 2015 and it was and still is my favorite hike if all time. The route we took was closer to 8.1 miles round trip. There’s four parts: Titou Gorge to breakfast river, then onto valley of desolation, then to the lake. The hike is challenging and you go over a variety of terrain. It’s helpful to have a local show you the way and the many great stops along the way: natural hot springs, valley of desolation, and more. Also it is a challenging hike with some severe drop offs, small river crossings and other challenges that a local can help you navigate. Do yourself a favor and hire a local guide on this one. We went with Marvin and it was epic! Jumped in Titou Gorge as a final finish (again, a local has to show you where to jump to avoid the rocks). Loved it. Technical trail with lots of obstacles to maneuver — slippery stairs when wet, rope climbs, river crossings. Extremely fun and unique terrain! A dip in the river was a nice reprieve on the way back down.

Incredible! The valley of Desalination is Mars!

I was jet lagged and dehydrated on this hike but don’t regret a thing!! Beautiful walk with plenty of fruit trees along the way!

I had a wonderful time walking this short trail. There is no fee and you must hike to the top of Scott’s Head. The weather in Dominica is beautiful everyday it doesn’t rain.

One of the most beautiful trails I’ve hiked. Such amazing variety of vegetation as well as topography.

Very nice hike, especially with a local guide.

First part is fairly easy and partly over roads. Do not miss Trafalgar falls which is just a short detour from the path. After the village of Laudat you turn right towards Middleham falls. After middleham falls the trail goes mainly flat to pretty wet forests with a few short but steep climbs and descents.

A short but very rewarding little hike. The original trail has washed out due to Tropical Storm Erica. Now it is just a matter offollowing the river bed and wade through some pools and climb over large boulders. Do not try this hike with heavy rains!

Best hike I did on Dominica. The start is at the visitor centre at Freshwater lake. The trail is sometimes steep and slippery so be carefull. It goes through some fabulous forests and offers some outstanding views. If you have time and energy left you can extend the walk to Boeri lake ( around 2 hours extra)

This section is rather long but the terrain is really nice and diverse. A nighlight is of course the emerald pool. This is the most popular site on Dominica and on a cruiseship day it can be really crowded. I was lucky; I had to place to myself. We ended the trail in Castle bruce but officially the trail ends a few km down the road to the north.

A well marked trail, mainly torugh the tropical rainforest but also passing a few villages. The trail has one main difficulty; the descent to and ascent from the river Clair near the end is very steep and extremely muddy. The brige over the river clair has collapsed during tropical storm Erika and was not repaired in December 2016.

Completed this section in December 2016. There was still a warning sign at the start of the hike that stated that the section was closed because of a landslade however a new route was already made around the landslide. This new route is VERY steep and slippery but ropes are put up for support. For the rest no problems. route is well marked. It takes around 3 hours.

Should you find yourself at the southern tip of this isolated island, you must climb out to the end of Scott's Head. It is really the only thing here! This is a quick outing, with most of the road/path up to the top only modarately steep. Gorgeous views!
