My favorite hike I've ever done. Beautiful, esp once you get into the old growth forest!

Great snow shoe trail! Several other hikers but not crowded at all. Saw several animal tracks, and tons of fresh powder so not ideal right now for sledding. Didn’t need snow shoes along the service road in, but definitely around the pond, especially where the trail dips under the trees. Beautiful area and amazing views!

I had fun on this trial with the pups today. We were breaking trail and I post-holed a few times up to my hip. Too many blow downs to consistently wear snowshoes. Several trees down and branches. The view from the top isn’t great, but I enjoyed walking around the campground area after and seeing the tide pools.

I love this loop. Great walk even in the rain.

One of the bad things about this particular hike, Is that there are four waterfalls in the area. This hike hits none of them. :(

Last quarter of the trail has snow. Slippery.

First hike up this trail with this much snow was an eye opener. I’ve hiked this trail in the past but not with this much snow. I had to turn around less than .2 miles from the top. I had post-holed several times up to that point (it didn’t help having a 30 lbs backpack but I needed it for training) but it was the wind that got me but I probably could have been a little more prepared for the cold that last .3 miles. Also the fact I lost the trail in the snow as tracks from other hikers was covered. Snow shoes and poles would have helped a lot but I was trying to make it without using them (although used poles on the way down). I’ll definitely do it again but be much more prepared.

A short flat walk on gravel around a once lovely but now contaminated lake sprinkled with tweakers, joggers, and normal folk trying to get a breath of fresh air. I would not recommend visiting after the sun goes down even though the Olympia city council in it’s accumulated wisdom has declared the area nuclear free. What a sad, hot mess.

Beware!! There must have been a windstorm or something that knocked down many trees that completely block the trail. Not small ones either. There is a humongous fallen tree that cannot be passed underneath and must be scrambled over. Extremely dangerous for children and those unsteady on their feet. The ranger station was closed by the time I finished so I was unable to make them aware. The trail should be closed in order for the dangers to be cleared

January 16, 2020. Got to the trail about 10:30a.m. Total hike was 3.5 miles with stopping for views and some minor deviations. Trail is “closed” due to bridge being out. Bridge is just sagging to right side, fully able to cross on left side. Approximately 8’ wood plank bridge. Still solid and safe. 95% of trail is do-able with any skill level. Last 5% is semi off-trail depending if waterfall water level is high enough. I had to climb over a 8’-10’ of river packed with downed trees to get across to finish the loop. Was too difficult, just provides the risk of getting wet. Overall decent hike with good trails. You could stay on the “Main Loop” which is a paved path if you didn’t feel like going into the actually muddy trails.
