Trail is packed down and snowshoes are not necessary. We did fine with micro spikes and poles which I felt was needed because of the packed slick snow. Great views on top and even though it gets very steep in places it is quick coming down. 3 Degree day and people were doing trail runs on it to the summit.

Very steep at the top, bring spikes and trek poles.

We went two weeks ago after some snow had accumulated. Micro spikes were a necessity, particularly for the last quarter mile which is sheer. Girlfriend was having trouble digging in and slid a lot. Came down that part on our asses, but otherwise a decent challenge.

I've been on this about 7 times before. I did this time with girlfriend on MLK day 2020. There was about 9 inches of snow, 8 degrees , sunny and 1 other person had taken it prior to us. The red blazes are wearing thin but numerous to keep on track. We went in the counterclockwise direction. The plaque describes it as "rigorous," but it's really not too tough at all. They have placed tags on several species of trees along the route. The "mine" was small and frozen over. There's some sort of Maypole contraption and heavy cables attached to it. The views are limited, but worthy. The forestry is super varied. We saw tons of deer tracks, and we THINK we saw a type of ferret or weasel or otter run near the stream.. Watch for changing wind patterns and don't let the calm wind of the teeny parking lot lull you into not bringing the layers you need. The girlfriend enjoyed it very much, so I was happy to have taken her

The Stowe recreation path was very slipper, so we went on the quiet path instead!

Honestly the conditions for this trail could not have been better. The snow was so nicely packed. Made it out and back in 4hours. I wore my summer hiking boots and micro spikes and got up fine without trekking poles. I even got ended up taking my micro spikes on the way down but this trail was incredible!

Nice hike, compact snow till about the second rock scramble where there’s about 6 inches to a foot of powder. Would recommend extra traction for ice.

First 2 miles are very flat. Last .2 miles you’re climbing a wall.

Great snowy hike. 2nd time there, 1st time to icy to make it to lodge. Made it today! Worth it
