magical this time of year with icicles covering everything. decent traffic on the trail today, but spaced out enough that i had most of the hike to myself. def need micro spikes. was a wonderful hike, windy in some parts, but the views were spectacular

Loved this loop, my favorite hike in Harriman I’ve done so far. Not difficult but a little slippery with some ice/moss on rocks. Lots of cool stuff here.

A great morning on the mountain. Some slushy ice in the beginning turned to ice and snow the rest of the way up. Micro spike heaven.

Good trail. Was not a huge fan of the man made stairs. Because of the stairs it makes it much more of a walk in the woods vs a hike. However the other half was great.

2-4 inches of fresh snow made for awesome scene. Micros were fine.

The trail is closed for the winter season. Looks amazing, will try to return when it opens up

Great winter hike - dome icy spots but nothing too treacherous. Not as pretty when the snow covers the miss... but still a beautiful hike with a great view near the top.

The best way to do the trail is to ascend eagle first and then do balsam loop. The loop other way has steep ascents. Fantastic views from the view point near Balsam peak is fabulous.

This was a cool hike. There is a gradual elevation from Adirondack Loj to the split to Mt Marcy trail and the lake (barely anything). There are many places to stop and camp, as well as use “toilets”,after the dam, but fires are not permitted. I also think you need to register at the Loj. Once you start up to Avalanche Lake, you start to gain elevation. Pretty steep in some spots, not very many switchbacks. You will need your snow shoes at this time of year (you need to take snow shoes regardless, but if the snow is deep enough and you aren’t wearing them, you will get a scolding from a ranger, or even a fine). When you get to the lake, you can choose to walk out into the lake. I heard it was a great point of view. We just opted to sit on the edge and eat lunch. We did the up an back route, which by the time you get back to Marcy Dam, you wish the hike was over, but you still have another 2 miles until you get back to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time during the winter months so you don’t find yourself out in the dark. It took a group of 4, with two people above 60 years old, 7.5 hours (four up, 30 mins for lunch, 3 back, with stops to layer-down and bathroom breaks). We also had great weather (35 degrees F, no precipitation and no wind!). All in all, I agree with the moderate rating. I put that you need a fee, because there is a fee to park at the Loj ($12 per car per day). You can rent equipment here as well.

Very tough 8.75 hour day. Snowshoes most of the way up, but crampons coming down the trails of Tabletop and Phelps with all the frozen streams. Back to snowshoes for the main trail.

Great day. Micro spikes needed as there is a significant amount of ice still. That may change over the weekend.

Nice hike. Did the loop counter clockwise. Saw a few peaks I’d hiked in the fall from the Curtis-Ormsbee trail (Friday, Balsam Cap, Lone, Rocky and Table from that view point). Needed microspikes. Snowshoes not really needed but in the winter that can change quickly.

Nice short hike to fire tower. We did it the Sunday before New Years. Only encountered one other couple. Had to wear micro spikes entire time

hiked this loop 1/21/20 counterclockwise doing Nippletop first. lots of snow, trail was nicely packed very little ice. used snow shoes the whole way. about a dozen blow downs that you have to crawl under. great views all day.

Great Hike, amazing views done on 01/20/20 lots of snow, micro spikes is a must, I didn't have to use my snowshoes, not so deep, suggest to do it counterclockwise. from Prediger Rd.
