Unique site worth the stop. This is simply a drive to the crater edge and rim trails. Does offer nice views from on top

Well worth the drive!

On the long drive back to Dallas from the New Mexico badlands, this was one of a handful of scenic roads in northern NM that made the extra few hours driving well worth the detour, especially compared to the I-40 alternative... I wouldn't say this stretch stands out compared to the others in this area (As someone else mentioned, the stretch between Taos and Angel Fire is a notable highlight), but it is a beautiful drive... That said, it's just a drive, if you're not physically exploring the trails/areas, I don't really see the point...

My husband and I took our two children here during our family vacation. The monument is beautiful and heartfelt. With 4 our our grandfathers serving in the armed forces it was special to us. The museum is moving as well and gave us great references fir my daughters social studies fair.

We always come through Cimarron Canyon on our way to Angel Fire and it’s a real treat for your eyes... plus it’s a fun drive if you enjoy curvy sports car kind of driving. I was not aware there had been a forest fire that affected a good portion of the forest on this route. Made me sad, but also happy to see the way nature is springing back. Lots of nice pull outs so you can enjoy the scenery and take a short hike. Be aware though- it is a State Park with a usage fee if you plan a real hike here.

Be prepared on weekends to wait at the visitor center until enough parking opens up at the top to send additional cars up. Park has a registration and number system so you can't just head up the road. Wait times can be 30 minutes or more, but the drive and the views from the top on a clear day are worth the wait.

Lovely scenic drive that covers a wide range of scenery and geologies. I’d recommend it as an augmentation to a nice hike.

good scenic drive loop. lots to see and will take most of the day if you stop and smell the roses so to speak. The best portions are in the Carson Ntl Forrest.

Decided not to hike our second day. We took this drive and had a blast. Enjoyed the views, stopped to take pictures. The lake at Eagle’s Nest State Park is beautiful! Make sure you stop. Before we made the complete loop, we turned off on Lower Arroyo Hondo to go to Black Rock Hot Springs. Highly recommend it.

Drove this stretch back in late June just after the Ute Park fire burned much of the Philmont scout ranch. It was very intense and killed nearly 100% of the tree cover in areas between Cimarron and Ute Park. It will take decades to recover portions of the forest. The drive is still stunning however, and much of Cimarron Canyon State Park was spared the fire. Will be interesting to see how the area recovers in the coming years.

Road is mostly washed out now after recent heavy rains. Impassable except with 4wd and somewhat difficult even with that. Also it is CLOSED, GATED, AND LOCKED 7 miles from the town of Monticello and on the north end also. I drove around on NM Hwy 52 to the northern access point and found it CLOSED, GATED, AND LOCKED about 2 miles in from NM Hwy 52

The only bad part was when it ended.

Scenic drive to the cave. The drive there is all uphill. It's all good until someone crosses the yellow line. Stay in your lane!

What a view. Nice highway and you go from flatlands to mountains in minutes, lots of great trails and ponderosa pines

I grew up in northern New Mexico so I’m no stranger to scenic mountain drives, but this one really surprised me and I considered it jaw dropping in places.

Beautiful country. Many hiking and camping opportunities. Great history museum in Alamos with the Nuclear site. NIce drive through the area or can stay for days.

Did this stretch of road on our way from Taos to Colorado Springs. Typical SW canyon country driving. I think the section from Taos to the Angel Fire cut off is just about in the same category. Both nice drives.

Easy trail moderate inclines with good scenic view into the valley and not to far off the main road of 82. Nice little waterfall to take pictures at good easy trail.

Spectacular drive! Inspiring and beautiful. Lots of trails in this area.
