For hikers, you should start at the Abiquiu lake dam because the the first two miles of CR 162 (where it intersects with Hwy 84) is asphalt and a few homes/ranches. On the dam side, you can park M-F at the park headquarters or on the dirt parking lot that is beside the road leading down the side of the dam. They close the HQ parking lot when the office isn't open so if you park there, be sure to check their hours so your car isn't locked in. The dirt parking lot across the street from HQ doesn't get locked so it's always a safe choice. From the bottom of the dam, it's about 5 miles of hiking on pretty flat but scenic terrain. Starting at the dam, the first two miles is usually in the shade because you're walking in a canyon. These cliff walls block the sun unless it's directly overhead. During the winter expect some snow along this part of the trail because the sun doesn't hit the snow on the trail so it tends to stick around until spring. The trail turns into asphalt pavement about two miles from the intersection of CR 162 and Hwy 84. So if you're on a nature hike, you should turn back once you hit the pavement. But if you're on a bike, take the pavement to Hwy 84, go east about 1/4 mile and you're be at Bodes and the post office. Bodes has pretty good food, drinks and bathrooms. And of course if you're on a bike, then you can do this trail in either direction. You can park your car at either Bodes or the Post Office.

If you are trying to hike to the tram and restaurant, DO NOT go on a Tuesday. Beautiful hike but my girlfriend and I almost died when we made it to the top and realized everything was closed and the sun was already down. Had to call fire rescue.

This trail, nothing exciting about it. Miss my Mark! My hikes will never be the same. W/Chad and Dave.

What a great day for a hike!! Perfect weather!! First hike of the decade!! This hike, which is more of a walk, is relatively flat, and transitions from paved road to crushed dirt to sand... and a walk along side the river is nice anytime of the year!!

Nice singletrack trail for hiking, mountain biking or trail running. Try to ignore the oil derricks and natural gas pipeline signs and just enjoy the vistas. Not much elevation gain so its a nice easy hike or run.

Packed sand and fine gravel surface good for walking, hiking or jogging. Long, flat out-and-back Trail so you can choose your own distance. Easy and good for all ages. Follows the river. Also has a great bike path.

This bike path stays pretty close to Alameda Parkway, so you get a good amount of road noise and never leave sight of the road. You also have maybe 5 road crossings or so during the 2.5 miles of this stretch of path. The western part of the path is also a bit bumpy.

Nice flat ride. Pavement is smooth for most part. Started up at Alameda Parkway and headed south for about 11 miles, then rode back north

Beautiful late afternoon stroll with cottonwoods changing and fall flowers and fruits in abundance.

My wife and I hiked this loop counterclockwise like some reviewers suggested. My gps recorded 6.9 miles for the loop. The last 1/4 of the hike was along a stream and very easy with a slight descent. Saw a flock of turkeys and tons of elk tracks. Very beautiful with differing ecosystems. Only saw 2 other hikers Lots of loose scree on the trails so footing was tricky at times. We agree that this is a great moderate hike.

Good road bike trail with few other cyclists seen. Nice to be on paved trail away from cars. Wish it was longer.

We started out downtown and the trail got better and better as it rolled toward a country landscape. We took some of our best pictures of our Santa Fe trip along the trail.

Walk, run, or bike. Dogs on leashes are ok. Fun family environment. Flat surface on sidewalk. A few up and down spots but mostly flat surface.

Went up 92 and then back down 93 (counter clockwise). Debate on which route to take- depends on what you want. If you want a workout at beginning with smooth downhill at the end go counter-clockwise. If you want a smooth trail with gradual elevation change consider up and back up T93. There is no great “vista” either way. I wouldn’t prefer to go down 92, it’s steeper. It took me 2:05 at 5.92 miles per farming gps.

If you do the whole perk loop you’re going to get lots of different trail conditions. There are some pretty steep parts and some really pleasant easy sections. Lots of rocks in some areas. The trail signs were not particularly good especially on the top where you have a four-way intersection that says nothingIt would be smart to have a back up map or of course all trails app. Overall it was definitely a good workout!

Awesome trail.

If you take the steeper way first it's quite strenuous, I would consider it more than moderate. There are a few good views but not many, was hoping for more payoff after going up so much.

The trail was very nice. Scenery was beautiful. Unfortunately a thunderstorm came upon us and we were unprepared and had to turn back.

Loved The Trails! My Son 7 And My Daughter 11 Did Very Well As First Timers.. I Definitely Recommend!!!

Easy breezy walk. Leashed doggos. Bikes. Joggers. Walkers. Trash along the way but nothing too gross. Enjoyable before the sun gets too hot these summer months.

From railroad tracks to walking bridge.

The trail does exist and I would not call it moderate - my choice would be easy, it just does not start at the post office. You could park at the post office, walk down to Hwy 84, walk along the shoulder of the highway to County road 162 and turn right before the river. The other option is to go to the Rio Charma Recreation Area of NM 96 at Abiquiu Dam a bit west of town and then walk from there towards Abiquiu. (6.5 miles West from Bode's, turn left onto NM 96 for 1.6 miles, turn left - there is a sign - right before the dam towards Rio Charma Recreation Area, follow the road down zig-zag the dam and go about 0.3 miles to the free Recreation Area for parking - there are Picnic tables + a vault toilet there). It is actually for the most part a dirt road (County Road162), that runs from Abiquiu to Aniquiu Dam. There is very little shade on the road. The road is very sandy in places, goes up and down a bit and does have some nice views. I did walk in from the top of the dam (there is parking at the Corps of Engineer Station on top of NM 96 on the right side). That walk up the dam on the rerun trip (about 0.6 mile long, but pretty steep) was something, lol, but what is life without a few challenge once in a while. I did not go all the way, but I did follow the road for about 5 miles before turning around. It is not the most interesting or challenging hike, but I was out in nature and that is all that counts to me. PS on the end I was on I did see 1 car, 5 people on bikes and a walking couple with their dog. Traffic on that end is not a concern!!!

We agree with the other reviewer‘s, go up 92 first, follow the trail counter clockwise so you get the steep incline out of the way when you’re fresh. Glad we started early in the morning because there is not a lot of shade. Our family of four did it in three hours… We have a 13-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son… We brought plenty of water and snacks and everyone did fine. The only disappointing part is that the summit does not have a big climax.
