I knew this trail wasn't going too be easy, but the snow made for some heavy breathing and sore legs. Beautiful! Stunning! Peaceful! Serene! All those things and more. Make sure and download the map layer, and check it frequently. I ran out of time and wasn't able to complete the last 0.5mi. I'll be back..,, but I'll probably wait for summer.

Still a lot of snow and ice above 7500 feet. Make sure you have snow and ice gear if you want to reach the top.

Spikes are definitely needed after a mile and a half. (More snow is on the way tomorrow) Super chill trail, though, with barely anyone on it. Beautiful views at the top

Snowshoed on 1/11/2020. Great trail once you find the start! You have to actually cross across the ski traffic at lift 4. Continue up to the left, you’ll feel like you’re going up one of the ski runs, stay to the sides out of the way of skiers but you’re going the right way! You’ll see a little wooden cabin and that’s where the trail actually starts. The first 3/4 of the trail is through a beautiful pine forest marked on the trees by blue circles. If you see the blue marker you’ve made it to the trail! The incline isn’t too bad but you might be out of breath if you aren’t used to the elevation. At the top the forest opens up and there are STUNNING views of the peaks, including Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico. The trail was pretty packed down. We used snowshoes but didn’t need them, you’d be fine with Yaktrax or microspikes.

Hiked this on Thursday and it was great! mixed dirt/gavel/snow at base, full snow after about 1.5-2 miles. Wore yaktrax and had trekking poles, had no issues. Gorgeous in winter!

First trail run of the year... still very icy, muddy, snowy, and on two occasions there were downed trees across the path so if you’re out with your mountain bike be aware. I believe the first downed tree was at 3miles on the recorded path and she second one was at 3.5 miles, both on the tunnel canyon trail. Beautiful day other wise, didn’t see anyone else and no wildlife.

January 5th. Beautiful hike overall. Wonderful views of the city and mountains. Poles and spikes required. A few hundred of meters after the crash, the trail is impossible to find, so my dog and I did not make it to the top since everything was covered by > 1 m of snow. Will try again when the snow melts. It was enjoyable nevertheless. PS. the small river (or Creek) exists.
