A friend and I recently hiked about half of this trail in three days. We did 60 miles in those three days, 22 miles the first day, 20 the second and 18 the third. We started at the Rantoul trailhead and ended in Admire. Overall the trail has great scenery and easy terrain. From Rantoul to the beginning outskirts of Osage City, the trail is nicely covered in limestone. Once inside Osage City the trail becomes grassy and eventually turns to basically mulch as they are still in the process of completing the limestone covering and bridge reinstallations. This did not slow our hike down. There is a sign that says trail closed coming out of Osage City, but it is still fine to use as long as there is no construction being done. We did encounter some closures about a mile west of Ottawa. There was a convenient detour that took us about half a mile north then two miles west then another half a mile south to get us back on the trail. In regards to water we each approximately carried a liter and a half and we were able to fill us at a Casey’s General Store as we were passing by or through each town. The only problem we encountered with water is when we came through Vassar. We could not find a convenience store there to refill, but about 7 miles west of Vassar there is a RV park about 60 yards off the trail where we found an outside water spicket. We got lucky with this find because we needed water for dinner and our only other option was to walk 1.6 miles to the nearest gas station. I would advise to use this spicket as it will save time and the water is clean, just be sure to let the spicket run for a bit. All in all, great hike, tough, but still great. Two things I would like to see improve are first many sources state the trail begins in Osawatomie, which it does, but there is no close parking to the trailhead. This is why we started in Rantoul. Secondly, I would like to see the undeveloped parts become more accessible because as a part of the American Discovery Trail, it deserves to have that same reputation as a greatly respected trail.

I live a block away and use this perhaps 3-6 x each month. I jog the dog mostly with my sons leading on their bikes. If rainy, flooding can close the trail. Afterward, mud slicks and ponding can be unfortunate side affects. Some spots could be ponding over 2”, posing no major issues for bikes, but sidetracking walkers and joggers. Sometimes where heavy brush borders the asphalt. The trail does have evidence of steady maintenance work, such as erosion control, resurfacing, or new parts for bridges. I also ride my longboard (skateboard) cruising the very smooth trail. Come on down and spot a deer, turtle, or fox, or hear owls and other birds. Historic sign kiosks add a fine touch too.

Best trail ever would have done more than 20 miles but sun was down!

Good for a walk or pushing a stroller.

I liked this trail. Easy navigated with lots of twists and turns. There was some mud in places but other than that it was a good hike. Good length and close by. Will do one again.

beautiful walk with the dog on New Year's Eve.

Fantastic trail that I always run when visiting family in Topeka. Today, I ran 20 mi, 4x5 mi loops, the trail was in as good as expected shape for end of December trails for KS. Some mud, some washout, one spot a tree had fallen across the trail. Temps mid 30s with on/off light snow flurries. But overall, this trail can’t be beat if you’re looking for something off the beaten path nearby.

great walk with the dog on a mild day.

Great trail to run. Saw about 30-40 Bald Eagles along the trail. Lots down near the dam at the end of the trail.

4 different great trails to choose from. Maps all along the trails. Trails are easy to moderate level. Beautiful scenic area. Safe and many hikers and mountain bikers out. Easy to get to. Good parking lots.

Good because of its length but we ended up on Blue River Greenway because the signage was bad & the condition of the pathway was shameful

Easy hike on a perfect day. I can see where it wouldn’t be fun after a rain, but when it’s dry, it’s great.

paved winding trail in the city. Great for a slow easy walk

Pretty good only downsides detour in middle & too short

More water crossings than expected but it was dry. Beautiful trail. Saw a buck. 2 horses. Plenty of wildlife.

Great trail. Only walked a mile in as we were stretching our legs from traveling. Well maintained trail. Took a side trail to the river banks.

Nice enough bike ride. Easy enough to stay on path. The gardens on the west side were a nice surprise. Some REALLY nice sports fields over here too. Wish I would've been able to play ball on fields that nice when I was a teenager. Lots of places along the trail to park your car and start at.

Trail is washed out.

Great trail for an easy hike. However, trails are not clearly marked and it is easy to get lost.

Walked the full down and back. Nothing extreme. Pretty straight forward and well maintained. Doesn’t have any hills or rough terrain. Good test for just distance. Plan on biking it next.

Love the wooded part of this trail which begins near Bethel college! Only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because part of the trail follows the highway, and I wasn’t a huge fan. This is a great, easy morning stroll that makes you feel like you’ve gotten away from the city!

My favorite in Kansas so far. Even though it rained off and on in the last few days. There is no mud. Great views. Early Sunday morning not too frequented. My dogs and I will be back for sure.
